Mafwa Theatre:

Visual identity for a community-based theatre group in Leeds.

Approach

Mafwa Theatre work with asylum seekers, refugees and other communities in Leeds to create theatre and performance art.

Having little in the way of branding, they commissioned Rhubarb Design House to create a visual identity which reflected the energy and diversity of the organisation. Having thought about the personality of their brand, Mafwa agreed on several core values; ‘playful’, ‘community’, ‘advocates’, ‘theatre makers’ and ‘colourful’. These values were picked out as key messages using bold, playful headline fonts.

As part of the branding, a new illustration style was developed that contains elements of the body and abstract shapes that combine to represent performance, energy and movement. The illustrations can be used individually or as a repeating tile pattern and are paired with a vibrant colour palette.
