Picturing Pontefract:

Exhibition design exploring a Yorkshire market town through the eyes of artists.

Approach

We worked with Pontefract Museum to design the exhibition graphics for Picturing Pontefract – an 8-month long exhibition exploring how artists, craftspeople and map makers have captured the town across different periods through paintings, plans, maps and models.

The core design concept centres on the idea of framing – reflecting both the act of viewing artworks and the way Pontefract itself has been interpreted over time. Large, angled blocks of colour create visual rhythm across the space, while also gently guiding visitors through the exhibition through distinct sections.

Cut-out silhouettes of local landmarks, produced from sustainable honeycomb card, introduce depth and material contrast. Lightweight and recyclable, the material offered a practical and environmentally conscious solution while its natural, unprinted texture sits against the painted colour blocks to add a tactile quality and a distinctive visual identity. A series of children’s interactives were also designed using honeycomb card panels, each featuring a simple frame detail that reinforces the exhibition’s central theme while creating engaging moments for younger visitors.
