Wakefield District Markets:
Vibrant new identity forms part of markets relaunch.
Approach
As part of Wakefield Council’s multi-million pound investment to modernise and reinvigorate the district’s markets, we were commissioned to create a new visual identity which would form part of the relaunch.
With markets in Castleford, Normanton, Ossett, Pontefract, South Elmsall and Wakefield, we were tasked with creating a visual style that would bring all 6 markets together under a unified identity. It was important that the branding was recognisable across the various locations, and that they were recognised as being part of the same collection.
A key part of the project was engagement with key stakeholders, including market traders and local councillors. We were keen for the identity to be something people could feel proud of and champion. We visited each location and sought opinions and ideas before presenting 3 design concepts that were put out to public vote.
With a nod to tradition, but a foot firmly placed in the here and now, the chosen identity features a vibrant and contemporary colour palette, supported by a suite of illustrated tiles which highlight the wide range of items and services that can be found across the various market sites. Modern typography gives an energetic feel, whilst subtle hints towards heritage are also present in the form of the logo and ‘sticker’ graphics. The strapline ‘Good Times and Great Finds’ succinctly rounds off the identity.
